A recipe guaranteed NOT to make you fat!

MT KILIMANJARO

Mt Kilimanjaro (from the Marangu Route)

‘An Adventure Recipe’

Ingredients:

*A group of ‘I-want-to-be-challenged-hikers’.
*The country of Tanzania.
*5,895m worth of inactive volcanic rubble that makes up Mt Kilimanjaro.
*1-2 capable mountain guides (dependent on quantity of hikers).
*20-30 cooks and porters (dependent on quantity of hikers).
*Fluent understanding of ‘pole pole’ (‘slowly slowly’ in Swahili).
*5 Days worth of will power.
*5 Days worth of sense of humour.
*1 Pair of sturdy hiking boots.
*2 x 250g of plain chocolate.
*1 Full pack of warm and weatherproof gear.
*1 Non-freeze water bottle with minimum of 1.5lt capacity.
*1 Strong backpack.
*1 Iron cast stomach.
*5 Tins of NIDO (powered milk).
*5 Tins of AFRICAFE (powered coffee).
*Reserve quantities of will power and humour.

Directions:

1: Pre-heat the country to a ‘suitable’ climate for hiking.
2: Pre-wear the hiking boots for ‘suitable’ comfort when hiking.
3: Pre-practise the saying of ‘pole pole’ until it is well understood and mastered.
4: Pre-prepare the stomach for an iron cast state needed when hiking (recommendation: eat in a dodgy restaurant prior to leaving home).
5: Mix the 1 Full pack of warm and weatherproof gear, 1 Non-freeze water bottle with minimum of 1.5lt capacity together with the 1 Pair of sturdy hiking boots and place into the backpack for an adventure of a lifetime.
6: Combine a desired amount of NIDO and AFRICAFE to boiling water for an ‘away from home coffee’.
7: Mix and stir 5 days worth of will power with 5 days worth of sense of humour and use at all times when on the mountain.
8: Bind a friendship with 1-2 capable mountain guides (dependent on quantity of hikers) and the 20-30 cooks and porters (dependent on quantity of hikers).
9: Store the reserve quantities of will power and humour where needed.
10: Repeat step 9 if needed.

Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain standing at 5,895m is an ‘adventure recipe’ for any relative novice hiker – provided that those quantities of ‘essential’ ingredients are mixed with care! I have to admit though that at the time of attempting the summit myself I personally wished that climbing Mt Kilimanjaro be a much simpler recipe – along the lines of making a chocolate cake!  Hmmm … chocolate cake … It may have been the ultimate challenge to ‘avoid’ yet climbing Mt Kilimanjaro was the ultimate challenge for those (like me) who wanted to be both physically and mentally challenged.

NB: Altitude personally got the better of me just near the top.  My 13 other hiking companions made it.

I guess then for me, I can best say steal Steven Tyler’s quote of … ‘Life’s a journey, not a destination’ … and true be the case!

A 7 day ‘Adventure Recipe’ –  amongst others …
